AmeriCorps
Community Safety Program
AmeriCorps is the domestic Peace Corps, a private/public partnership based
in the nonprofit sector, which involves Americans of all ages in results-driven
service. AmeriCorps involves more than 40,000 members who serve full or
part-time. In exchange for a year or two of service, AmeriCorps members
earn education awards to help repay college loans or to help pay for college,
graduate school, or vocational training. AmeriCorps members learn skills,
take on serious responsibilities and join a network of people committed
to service.
AmeriCorps has three overarching goals:
- Getting Things Done
- Strengthening Communities
- Member Development
AmeriCorps members strengthen communities by bringing together a wide
range of citizens - local and national non-profits; city, state, and national
leaders; local businesses and organizations. A cost/benefit analysis commissioned
by the IBM, Dana, and Irvine foundations found that every federal dollar
invested in the programs studied returns $1.60 to $2.60 in direct, measurable
benefits.
