History
CHP was created after a 1985 study revealed the need for a new way to
provide affordable places to live. The search for a model program led
Columbus officials to the Columbia, Maryland-based Enterprise Foundation
founded by philanthropist and urban developer James Rouse. In 1987, Columbus
officials asked Rouse to help establish a similar organization here, and
Columbus Housing Partnership was born. The Enterprise Foundation continues
to mentor, sponsor and support CHP's efforts to this day.
Building Affordable Homes
Columbus Housing Partnership has committed its efforts and resources
toward providing quality, affordable housing to low and moderate income
families in the Columbus area for more than a decade. Since its inception,
CHP has developed over 3,200 affordable housing units and assisted an
additional 2,500 families pursuing rental or home ownership opportunities,
down payment assistance and housing counseling.
According to the City of Columbus' 2000 Consolidated Plan, "for
low and moderate income households in Franklin County, housing affordability
far surpasses housing conditions as the principle housing need."
